Unfixed Drainage systems, causes serious floods in some parts of Cotcot, Liloan Cebu Province

Seven months have passed by since the strike of Typhoon Odette in the Visayas region. Due to this incident, damages in pipe lines and the problems in drainage systems have occurred. Until now, people still haven’t seen any action or improvement in terms of these concerns they were raising in their specific areas at Cotcot, Liloan.

According to Vilma Cabanato, one of the residents in Purok Moringga Hill, Cotcot, “Ay, dugay nami nagpaabot jud na matarong ng canal day kay akong mga anak ron limited face to face raba diha sa Tiltilon [Elementary school] nya perti lisura ug mag labang2 diha sa baha ting ulan”.

Vilma also added that she was afraid of the increased chances of having more dengue cases in their area. Residents knew that before typhoon Odette arrived, the main problem of the place was always the extreme floodings.

It was then remembered that on the year 2012, Mayor Vincent Franco “Duke” Frasco headed the project, named “Drainage Blitz Project in Liloan,” which aims to prevent flooding in barangays Cotcot, Jubay, Poblacion, Tayud, Yati, San Vicente, and Catarman. The municipal government of Liloan has set aside P10 million for the construction of a drainage system in low land barangays that year.

These plans seemed very enticing and has eventually implemented yet, residents also witnessed how the job was poorly done and some was left discontinued.

In an interview with the Barangay Captain of Cotcot, Hon. Lorena Yongco, “We understand that these drainage systems aren’t enough, naa nani plano ga, before palang sa pag Odette. The execution will happen very soonest. Ato lang gyud i-rest assured that this time there will be no errors”, she said.

Another assurance from a leader was again released. There is no mentioned date of when will it be taken care of yet the sure thing is, they are fully aware of the problem. In this case, the residents will have to wait if these words will be put into action or not.
